Abstract:

The COVID-19 has spread widely in the past three years, causing patients around the world to suffer from various degrees of post-COVID-19 symptoms. Based on our clinical cases, the main symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, hoarse voice, dry mouth and sore throat, poor appetite, frequent cold due to decline in immunity, and emotional agitation or other negative effects caused by poor sleeping quality. These symptoms seriously affect patients’ quality of life and work and may lead to further complications. This is a problem worth solving and should not be ignored.

Case: a 38-year-old female suffered from COVID-19 and tested negative at week 3 after. She had a hoarse voice, dry lips, dry cough, sticky sputum, poor sleeping quality, poor appetite, and depressed mood. Tongue examination showed a reddened tongue tip, with light yellow coating at the base of the tongue. At week 5, the above symptoms persisted. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the tongue tip reflects the condition of the heart. The heart is the outgrowth of the spirit, and the brain affiliated with the spirit. If the tongue tip is pale and pinky, it usually represents deficiency of heart-yang or insufficiency of qi and blood. Reddened tongue tip usually represents deficiency of heart-yin or heart fire hyperactivity.

Considering the symptoms on the patient, we prescribed Fructus Pirum and Nelumbinis Plumula to clear lung heat and purge heart fire; Coicis Semen and Lablab Semen Album to boost the heart, promote urination, and leach out dampness; Gastrodiae Phizoma to dispel wind, invigorate the brain, and calm the spirit; Ophiopogonos Radix and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma to engender fluid, moisten lung, and quench thirst; Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium to disperse binds, transform phlegm, and relieve cough.

Based on the herbal remedy, we further add partridge and lean meat to reinforce the action of nourishing yin, transform phlegm, and relieve cough; turkey leg and Astragali Radix to warm the center, and supplement deficiency.

After one week of applying Chinese Medicine cuisine and herbal remedy, the symptoms improved significantly. The patient had a recovery of appetite, was able to sleep for at least six hours, and cough was reduced by 90%, everything was getting back into the swing of things.

The patient’s family members were grateful for her improvement in health and decided to have a 7-day joyride to NewBrunswick. During the trip, the patient was in good health. The case showed that herbal remedy cooperated with Chinese Medicine cuisine indeed boosted the patient’s immunity and helped recovery of zang-fu functions. It is also an inspiration that the 5000-year culture of integration of Chinese Medicine cuisine and herbal remedy should be fully utilized in the treatment of long-COVID patients by reducing the severity of long-term sequelae.
